P&O IONA Arrival and Naming Ceremony was a really well written entry, the submission demonstrated how to overcome a “Logistic Challenge” on many levels, the way the team had to deal with the challenge of not only launching a new ship, but also how do you showcase the Iona with no live audience, and the logistics of creating a Covid free environment for crew and contractors, ensuring safety protocols were always adhered to.
The biggest challenge was the Covid protocols, with this event being seen as a significant moment for the business, a signal of hope for the future as all operations and sailings were paused during the pandemic. The team had just 8 weeks to produce this event which was a TV style show consisting of a 30 minute stream of live and pre-recorded material, hosted by Jo Whiley and with a performance from Iona’s Musical Director Gary Barlow, viewers at home were immersed in the journey of Iona, from her build in the shipyard, to the magical sunrise moment she arrived into Southampton for the first time.
The entire event had no live audience with over 250 crew quayside following strict filming Covid safe guidelines, produced and endorsed by BAFTA. Covid protocols were in place on-site and marshals monitored the safety of the crew and talent involved.
A brilliant example of a huge Logistical Challenge, that was solved in a way that enabled the team to produce a truly spectacular event and setting an example of overcoming complicated restrictions, giving hope to the cruise industry, guests, and the team when the cruise industry re-opens.
